The importance of specification choices when analyzing sectoral productivity gaps

چکیده
A consistent finding in the development literature is that average non-farm labor productivity higher than farm productivity. These differences are sometimes used to promote policies which advance sector. In this article, we analyze importance of two specification choices when comparing gaps, using detailed household panel data from Malawi. Importantly, able calculate both revenue products (ARPLs)—similar most sectoral gap literature—as well as marginal (MRPLs). We show choice measure combined with production function can lead different rankings. MRPLs translog functions suggest sector more productive sector, while a Cobb-Douglas and ARPLs find opposite ranking.

The Evolution of Sectoral Productivity: Measurement and Implications∗
We estimate total factor productivities at the sector level for 72 countries and 5 decades, and examine how they evolve over time in both developed and developing countries. In both country groups, there has been relative productivity convergence: productivity grew systematically faster in sectors that were initially relatively less productive. These changes have had a significant impact on tra...
متن کاملAnalyzing Organizational Information Gaps
In this paper, we analyze the relation of private and public information spaces in organizations and its implication for organizational knowledge management. By private information spaces, we mean all (electronic) information, which is only accessible by a single person in an organization (e.g. local files or personal E-Mails). The organizational information space in turn, consists of all elect...
متن کاملSectoral Heterogeneity, the Skill Premium and Productivity Dynamics
An intricate dynamic pattern has been commonly observed in many developed countries during the past decades. This pattern contains a simultaneous rise in the following economic variables: (i) education premium, (ii) educated labor supply, (iii) total factor productivity, (iv) labor productivity, and (v) income inequality. Typical explanations for the different elements of this pattern assume a ...
متن کاملReal Exchange Rates and Sectoral Productivity in the Eurozone
We investigate the link between real exchange rates and sectoral total factor productivity measures for countries in the Eurozone. Real exchange rate patterns closely accord with an amended Balassa-Samuelson interpretation, both in cross-section and time series. We construct a sticky price dynamic general equilibrium model to generate a crosssection and time series of real exchange rates that c...
